Message from Jen
Welcome back everyone to Term 1 and a new year 2012! It is great to see all the children back and hear about their holiday adventures, and also meet our new children as we welcome them into our classroom.
We introduce Mohanan Kunjappan who lives in Napier with his family and has just graduated with a Diploma in Teaching (Early Childhood Education). Mohanan also holds a Bachelor of Teaching and a Bachelor of Science from India. He is currently working on a casual basis with us, which may lead to a permanent position as he awaits his provisional registration, we will keep you posted.
The teaching team thus far is myself, Michelle and Kirsty, and Jayde is available in the office to deal with any admin/enrolment issues. You can reach Jayde on the following days/times:

Other person(s) who can collect your child
We must have written permission from the parent/caregiver if you require someone else to collect your child. Please complete one of the forms slotted in behind the attendance sheet sign in, we keep these on your records. In addition please notify when this person will collect your child on the attendance sheet on the day, or let a teacher know.
Latecomers
We ask for your support here. If you arrive past 9am, please help your child to choose their name and encourage them to choose an activity inside to settle them quietly into the working classroom.
Absences
We really appreciate a courtesy call from parents in the mornings if your child is going to be absent that day, or if you are running late to drop off or pick up.
Important WINZ information
If you have an existing subsidy with WINZ and you increase or decrease your days you will need to update this with WINZ asap. We have the “Change of Circumstances” form that you can collect from the office; we will need to complete and sign off our part first. The sooner parents get this paperwork to WINZ the better as WINZ takes on average, 2 weeks to process documentation and will only back date payments from the date they receive the documentation – not from the date of the change as some people think.
Immunisation Charts
A reminder to parents who have children turning 4 who wish to immunize their children, please ensure to bring in your Well Child book so we can take a copy of the chart so our records remain current.

Montessori Glossary:
Work
From an evolutionary perspective, the long period of childhood exists so children can learn and experiment in a relatively pressure-free environment. Most social scientists refer to this pressure-free experimentation as play (e.g., see Groos, 1901), although Montessori preferred to call this activity the work of childhood. Children certainly are serious when engaged in the kind of play that meets developmental needs and, given freedom and time, will choose purposeful activities over frivolous make-believe ones.
Repetition
The young child's work is very different from the adult's. When an adult works, he sets out to accomplish some goal and stops working when the object has been achieved. A child, however, does not work to accomplish an external goal but rather an internal one. Consequently, she will repeat an activity until the inner goal is accomplished. The unconscious urge to repeat helps the child to coordinate a movement or acquire some ability.
